” The recently formed Middlewich Town Over 50’s Walking Football team recently marked an impressive debut in the Cheshire FA Cup competition at Moss Farm in Northwich on the 17th August 2025. Entering the tournament for the first time, the side, formed early 2025 by veteran Rick Ward, faced strong opposition from seven well-established teams from across the county.
Despite their relative newcomer status, the team showed great determination, skill, and team spirit throughout the competition. Sporting a brand new kit with new sponsorship from MRC (Manchester Radar Calibration – thanks Adam Corke!), with a blend of disciplined defending and creative attacking play, they secured strong results that carried them through the days competition.
Under the ‘vocal’ guidance of their Manager, Paul ‘Camey’ Came, the team endured all aspects of ‘the beautiful game’ (albeit at a reduced pace!), up against everything from controversial refereeing decisions to blue card ‘sin bins’ to playing some great football and scoring some glorious goals. Under the cool captaincy of Jeff Cartwright, notable goal scorers were Barry ‘Baz’ Jones, and birthday boy Antony ‘Foggy’ Fogg who has not stopped telling everyone he meets about his epic strike!
At the end of a competitive day of football, the team proudly finished in 3rd place overall, an excellent achievement given the calibre of opponents and their relatively limited experience playing together. The result highlights the team’s potential and lays a strong foundation for future competitions.
The squad is now looking forward to building on this early success, with regular training sessions planned and more tournaments ahead, including the Cheshire Walking Football League starting in September.
Thanks again to our amazing sponsor, MRC and the efforts put in by Rick and Camey and the support from Middlewich Town Football Club.”
